English Language Proficiency

All applicants to the George Washington University must demonstrate excellent English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Graduate applicants who have not earned (or will not earn before matriculation) a postsecondary degree from a U.S. institution are required to submit TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) scores to be considered for admission. Scores may not be more than two years old.

The MPH@GW Educational Testing Service (ETS) school code for TOEFL is 3441.

Minimum Score Requirements

  • TOEFL: 100 on the Internet exam (iBT)
  • IELTS: 7.0 overall with no individual score below 6.0. If applicants provide their TRF number, the Office of Admissions & Enrollment can verify IELTS results.

Exceptions are granted to applicants who earned (or will earn before matriculation) a postsecondary degree from an institution in a country that qualifies for the English language exam exemption. If you are unsure whether you qualify for an exemption, please contact us via e-mail.

Disclaimer: The George Washington University reserves the right to request proof of English proficiency from any applicant.

Official Transcripts

Mail official, sealed transcripts from each academic institution you have attended, including community college coursework, to:

The George Washington University
Application Processing Center
MPH@GW
P.O. Box 30096 007-002
College Station, TX 77842

If you earned credits at an international institution outside of a study-abroad program, you will need to have your coursework evaluated by World Education Services (WES).

Many schools issue transcripts electronically, either through their own web services or through vendors. If this option is available through the institutions you attended, please specify that your transcript(s) be sent to applicationservices@publichealthonline.gwu.edu or select MPH@GW – Online Program if listed as an option through a vendor. This will expedite the delivery of your transcript(s) and the completion of your application.

Please note: To be considered an official transcript, the transcript must be sent directly from your institution(s) or through an electronic transcript vendor retained by that institution. Transcripts submitted by enrolled or prospective students are considered unofficial documents, even if they are in a sealed envelope provided to you by the issuing university.

Resume or CV

In a current resume or CV, list any relevant professional and academic experience, including volunteer work, and honors and awards received.

Letters of Recommendation

Two letters of recommendation are required, and both must be written within one year of the date of submission. These letters should speak to your ability to succeed in the MPH@GW program, from an academic or a professional perspective. You may provide a third professional recommendation, but it is not required.

GRE Scores

At Milken Institute SPH, we believe in taking a holistic approach to the application review process and considering all aspects of an applicant’s submission. Given this, no GRE scores are required. However, you may submit your test scores if you feel they will strengthen your application.

If you are interested in submitting GRE scores, and you have not yet completed the GRE, we encourage you to take advantage of a partnership between MPH@GW and GRE preparation service Manhattan Prep. You will receive a 15 percent discount on test prep services designed to meet different needs, budgets and schedules. Speak with an Admissions Counselor for more information.
