Health Administration Fellowships to Apply to in 2016

If you are seeking to hone your leadership skills and advance your career after completing a Master of Health Administration degree, securing a health administration fellowship is a perfect way to do it. These fellowships are one- to two-year postgraduate programs that provide real-world experience in hospitals and health care systems as fellows work closely with top-level executives. By completing special projects and rotations in various areas, fellows can gain critical skill sets that will help them more easily launch their careers as health care system executives.

Most programs provide a competitive salary, full benefits and the opportunity to participate in conferences and other types of professional development. In fact, according to a compensation survey of postgraduate fellowship programs performed by the American College of Healthcare Executives, salaries range from a low of $30,000 to a high of more than $70,000 annually — with a median salary of $49,800. Forty-six percent of programs included in the survey indicated that compensation may be increased during the fellowship, and 19 percent of programs offer eligibility for incentives or bonuses. The core of the program is tied to clinical operations, the health plan, community practice, finance, information technology and research. Three program concentrations have been designed to capitalize on the market and clinical differences of Geisinger’s service area hubs.

This program is organized through the Department of Emergency Medicine at the George Washington University, in collaboration with the GW Milken Institute School of Public Health and its Department of Health Policy. The two-year fellowship curriculum provides a comprehensive exposure to the broad scope of emergency department operations and administration in emergency medicine. The choice of degree program (MPH, MHSA, or MS in Systems Engineering) is made in conjunction with the fellow and program faculty. Fellows accepted into the program must have completed an ACGME-accredited emergency medicine residency and be eligible for or have successfully completed certification by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

Kaiser Permanente offers three types of fellowships: a 12- or 18-month program in Northern California that focuses on health care operations with two, six-month rotations at a medical center followed by an optional six-month corporate rotation held at the regional offices; a 24-month fellowship in Southern California that includes three, eight-month rotations, with two at a medical center and/or medical office and one at the regional offices; and a 12-month program in the Northwest with two, six-month rotations at the medical center.

Kindred’s Executive Fellow Program provides two specific tracks — one within the hospital division and one within the nursing center division. In each, training and development is provided for individuals seeking leadership careers in post-acute care. Sutter Health’s Patrick E. Fry Fellowship for Excellence in Health Care Leadership is a one-year program that gives master’s-prepared candidates hands-on, specialized administrative experience in acute care hospitals, medical groups and foundations, and ambulatory care environments.

This fellowship is a one-year commitment in which fellows will be involved in a variety of strategic projects and paired with an executive mentor, whom the fellow will shadow in order to learn from his or her experiences. The role of the mentor is to provide the fellow with a more cohesive understanding of the Texas Children’s organization and its strategic priorities and growth plans, as well as to ensure the fellow has a well-rounded experience in the program.

UC Davis Medical Center is one of 41 NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation and the region’s only level-one pediatric and adult trauma center — providing fellows with a dynamic training experience in hospital administration. During the first year, the fellow works in the office of the chief operating officer. An optional second year would be spent in the office of the CEO.

This one-year program provides on-the-job training in the skills and responsibilities required of an administrator in a major academic health system. The fellow reports directly to the CEO and supporting executive team and becomes an entry-level administrator by assuming increasing levels of responsibility and working with administrators and staff at all levels of the organization.
